Do you need to encrypt your hard drive or solid state drive using an encryption tool like Bitlocker, FileVault or Veracrypt for your Windows or macOS laptop/desktop? ABSOLUTELY! In this Techlore video tutorial/guide, I explain and demonstrate the reasons why it is absolutely necessary for you to encrypt your drives to protect your files, programs and operating system from a simple attack where you boot a live Linux distribution and mount an unencrypted drive without your password. This can lead to viruses, keyloggers, identity theft, stolen documents/files, deleted documents/files or writing illegal files that do not belong to you.

This is an extremely quick and easy hack/attack that can be performed by anyone with physical access to your computer for a few minutes. This works on any version of Windows, any version of MacOS, and on laptops and desktops as long as the drive is not encrypted. Even if you have a password to log in! (A password is not drive encryption.) This is a prerequisite if you want to protect your digital security and privacy.

Additional comments:
1) The absolute best thing you can do to combat this problem is to spread the word. Be sure to share this video with all your friends! Chances are they have no idea this is possible and think a simple login password is enough. Protect your friends and family
2) I fully realize that both FileVault and BitLocker use proprietary encryption that most likely contains corporate and/or government backdoors. A) ANY encryption is still infinitely better than no encryption at all, B) These are the absolute easiest ways to encrypt your computer, and C) If you want really good open encryption, you should use Veracrypt or a PGP drive encryption tool, although they are a bit harder to set up.
3) Macs can only be mounted read-only, so you can't copy files to a Mac computer or modify the Mac files. However, you can still view them and copy them to another computer… still a big risk!
4) As shown in the video, adding a password to change the boot priority and/or access the BIOS is a great security precaution, but it won't help you at all if someone physically removes the drive from your computer.
5) A huge security benefit is that you know your data is safe if your laptop is ever lost or stolen 🙂 Loading viruses and keyloggers is very sophisticated and frankly rare. Simple data theft is the main attack we avoid.
