More than ever, older people are looking for solutions to help them stay at home longer, also known as #aginginplace. One of the simplest devices people can use to stay safe at home is a medical alert system. In today's video, I answer the following questions. What are medical alert systems and when should you use one?

What is a medical alert system?

Medical alert systems are a simple and straightforward way to call for help in an emergency. These small devices can be worn around the neck or wrist, attached to a belt, or carried in a purse.

Some medical alert systems only work at home within range of a base station, while others can be used anywhere there is a cellular signal. Simple medical alert systems consist of a button that connects the user to a professional monitoring center, while more complex medical alert devices can track location, automatically detect falls, and record daily activities. No matter what your lifestyle or daily routine is, there are a variety of medical alerts to suit your needs.

When should you use a medical alert system?

If the potential user has fallen, it's time to consider using a medical alert system. According to the National Council on Aging, "falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries among older Americans." While a medical alert system can't PREVENT falls, it is key to ensuring that help arrives quickly if a fall does occur. People who live alone, have balance and gait problems, or take medications that can cause dizziness are all good candidates for using a medical alert system.

Even if there have been no falls in the past, a medical alert system can give users and their loved ones peace of mind knowing that help is just a push of a button away.
