What is web hosting?

Hi, I'm Tony Messer and in this video I'm going to explain everything you need to know about web hosting.

By the end of this video, you will have all the information you need to make an informed decision when purchasing a hosting service.

OK, so the basics. Web hosting is the home of your website. If you want a website, you need a place to host it. That's exactly what a hosting service is.

There are different types of web hosting such as shared hosting, reseller hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated servers.

But in this video I'm going to talk about shared hosting, the most popular and cheapest type of hosting.

Hosting is essentially the computer and network infrastructure that makes your website available across the Internet.

In addition, it also provides you with other important services like email.

How does it all work?

It all starts with a server. A server is essentially a powerful computer housed in a highly secure, purpose-built, multi-million pound facility called a data centre.

The data center provides the necessary power supply and network connectivity with temperature control, backup and fire extinguishing systems as well as a high level of physical security.

Security is also important at the server level, so critical components such as hard drives in the server, for example, are built with duplicate parts so that there is no single point of failure.

This ensures that your website is always available.

So when you order a hosting service, you order the physical storage space on one of the servers as well as the bandwidth, i.e. the network connection to the server.

Most of the time, hosting is advertised in terms of storage space and bandwidth and measured in gigabytes, for example 5 GB of storage space and 100 GB of bandwidth.

The storage space includes your website files (including databases) and your emails.

Monthly bandwidth is the network traffic to and from your web hosting. Most of it is the email traffic you send and receive, but it also includes traffic to your website.

To manage your web hosting, you need a user-friendly interface called Control Panel. One of the most popular is cPanel. It allows you to manage all aspects of your hosting such as setting up email addresses, managing domains, databases and many other things from a user-friendly interface.

If you want to create your own website, you can use the included Website Builder tool, which allows even non-technical people to create a website using ready-made templates.

For advanced users or if you have a web designer, there is also plenty of pre-installed software for creating advanced websites as well as databases like MySQL.

These free tools include popular applications like WordPress as well as advanced e-commerce tools like Prestashop and Magento so you can sell online.

Other security features include anti-spam and data backup. These ensure that your emails always arrive and your data is protected.

If you are with a hosting company and want to switch, it is a very straightforward process called migration. It just involves copying your files and making a few small changes to your domain name.

So that was a quick overview of hosting.
