On March 16, the Election Commission of India announced the dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The Model Code of Conduct has thus come into force.

What is the Model Code of Conduct (MCC)? The MCC is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India that stipulates how political parties and candidates must conduct themselves during election campaigns and voting.

It provides instructions on how ministers of the parties in power should conduct themselves during the MCC's period of validity. It explains how parties can lodge complaints with the election observers in the event of a dispute.

The code comes into force immediately upon notification of the election date and remains in force until the election result is announced. The MCC applies to all elections from the Lok Sabha and state assemblies to local government elections.

We examine policies for political parties, candidates, governments, MCC enforcement, and more.
