What is test coverage?

How do we test systematically using a method that is repeatable and objective? How do we create an evenly distributed set of tests so that we cover everything in a meaningful and even way? How do we measure our tests? How do we manage progress? And how many tests are enough anyway?

Coverage helps us understand different things. For example, what we want to test and how it helps us identify the things to test and how we will cover them. Coverage tells us what we have covered when we have done testing and what we have not covered – what is left to test?

Coverage helps us build trust with our stakeholders. A certain level of trust is gained by having 100% coverage of a test model. Coverage helps us understand how thorough our testing is.

The reporting also says something about how good or effective our tests are. But that's a complex question. We'll talk about that later.

In this video I want to explain what the concept of coverage means for testers.

If you want to learn more about the concepts I discuss in the glossary videos, you'll probably find it helpful to check out the Leadership in Test online course I created a year or two ago. It covers some of the topics in more detail and obviously provides a more structured approach to explaining the concepts. It also gives you an idea of how to do some of the things I talk about. I hope you can take a look and learn something from it. The link is here: https://bit.ly/leadintest
