So what is process documentation? It is a detailed, step-by-step description of any kind of business process. It is also a set of preliminary documents designed to comprehensively describe a process flow and details. It acts as a more focused guide to process mapping from the perspective of the people involved in the process. This real-life example may come to mind when you think about process documentation. Any kind of process that takes place in an organization, for example, replenishment of inventory, is a process. What role each of the participants plays in this entire process, we need to document one by one so that we can identify the flow from start to finish.
We need to know the why of something to understand its importance. So why is process documentation necessary? It helps everyone involved understand how a business or technical process works. The purpose of documentation is to make the process accessible to everyone involved and to gather critical input for process improvement. This allows departments to optimize processes and provide consistency to those involved.
