In cybersecurity, a vulnerability is a weakness or flaw in a computer system that can be exploited by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to the computer system.

A cyberattack that successfully exploits a vulnerability can execute malicious code, install malware, steal confidential data, and also crash the entire infected system.

NIST defines a vulnerability as a weakness in the computational logic (e.g. code) of software and hardware components that, if exploited, has a negative impact on confidentiality, integrity, or availability.

ISO 27001 defines vulnerability as a weakness of an asset or control that could potentially be exploited by one or more threats.
