The idea and practice of 360-degree feedback has had its ups and downs since it first emerged in the 1950s. And it really took off in the 1990s. But today it's just as important as ever. So let's look at 360-degree feedback from different angles.

Watching this video is worth 4 CPD points towards management courses*.

What is 360-degree feedback?

Class notes
360-degree feedback is a method of conducting a performance appraisal. It involves collecting feedback from a number of people. It:
• Provides managers and supervisors with evidence of your skills, attitudes and achievements.
• Helps you meet your developmental needs by giving you information about how you are perceived by others.

There are processes for:
• Collecting the information – usually some kind of standard survey
• Collecting and analyzing information
• Presentation of the results to you and your manager or supervisor

Four steps to 360-degree feedback
1. Select a group of people who want to give you feedback.
2. The assessors fill out a questionnaire
3. The software creates a report
4. The assessor and the executor meet to discuss the results

As expected, each reviewer can judge the artist more or less accurately. Inaccuracies can arise from the following:

– Lack of clarity about the performance standards the organization expects and how these are to be assessed
– Lack of precision in the application of the competency standard framework
– Selective observation
– Biased assessment – unconscious
– Biased assessment – conscious

RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
To conduct formal 360-degree feedback in the workplace, you need a structure, but if you don't have one, there's nothing stopping you from asking others for their feedback.
1. Identify 3 to 8 people you can ask for feedback. This should be a mix of people who know your work in different contexts (1 MC CPD point)
2. Speak to each person individually. Ask them if they would prefer to give you written feedback or give you feedback in person. Then agree a time frame with each person. (2 MC CPD points)
3. Collect your feedback and review it carefully. What does it tell you? What can you learn from it? (3 MC CPD points)
4. Discuss this feedback with a coach, mentor or other trusted advice source (2 MC CPD points)
