Follow us on a tour of the main attractions surrounding Euro 2012, from buying kit to the fan zone and the stadium.
The 2012 European Championships, by far the biggest sporting event ever held in Poland, will begin in Warsaw on 8 June, adding to the list of notable moments in the turbulent history of this impressive city.
Although Warsaw is best known for more unfortunate events – namely the destruction wrought by the Nazis in World War II and the 44 years of Communism that followed – it has changed in leaps and bounds since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989, and, given the growing skyline and modern amenities found here today, the city could even be described as cosmopolitan.
Much of the city's growth is also thanks to the tournament. After five years of preparation, Warsaw now has a brand new stadium, new roads, a new railway line to and from the airport, and much improved tourist infrastructure (though projects like a new east-west metro line and others are a sign that the rebuilding of Warsaw and Poland is not yet complete). There is little doubt that the four weeks of the tournament will push the city to its limits. But fear not. The locals have handled much more than just a football tournament, smiling, dancing, and laughing along the way. Expect that same spirit, combined with the natural hospitality of the Poles, to see them through the day admirably.
For those of you who want to get the most out of the city (in addition to all aspects of the football tournament), we have produced a mini city guide with the most important, accurate and independently written information available. Remember, nobody knows a city like the locals, and that's exactly what we are. This guide has been produced in print; there is an online version (http://www.inyourpocket.com/poland/EURO-2012-Warsaw-English) which includes a downloadable PDF that you can view on your tablet; and an excellent application for your iPhone (http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/iyp-guides/id447075628?mt=8). And this is just a special addition to our regular 132-page guide, which is available in English from your hotel concierge, online at http://warsaw.inyourpocket.com or as a free downloadable PDF.
