The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released in March 2017 to critical acclaim. The success of this massive open-world adventure comes from completely reinventing the way players are introduced to the mechanics of Hyrule and Link's epic quest. By removing the item gating feature and cumbersome tutorials of previous games, Breath of the Wild manages to create 100 hours of seemingly self-paced gameplay that is arguably more engaging than any game in the series that has come before it.

By looking at the history of The Legend of Zelda series (and a bit of Mario to round it out), we'll examine all the ways the player is introduced to the core game mechanics and how this has contributed to the series' current reinvention. In doing so, we'll also compare each of these player onboarding experiences to modern user onboarding experiences on the web – covering the good, bad, and ugly of the internet and Hyrule in the process.

Learning objectives and outcomes:
While this talk is in no way specific to Drupal, it does cover user experiences that apply across the web—Drupal-powered or not. You should leave this session with some new ways of thinking about how we deliver user experiences on our websites and web applications. And you'll probably want to play some video games, too.
