The code that forms the basis of the web service's platform and internal tools was published on GitHub – the widely used code repository now owned by Microsoft Corp., according to a complaint filed by Twitter in a California court on Friday. GitHub Inc. complied with Twitter's request to remove the data due to copyright infringement and posted Twitter's request online. The account responsible for the publication, called FreeSpeechEnthusiast, had signed up to GitHub earlier this year and appears to have uploaded only the Twitter cache.
Twitter is now asking the court to issue a subpoena to reveal the identity of the user behind this account, as well as the names and other information of the users who posted, downloaded or uploaded the data. Elon Musk's social network has already asked GitHub for corresponding names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, social media profiles and IP addresses.
GitHub declined to comment on its decision to remove the content, citing Twitter's publication of a request to remove it. Twitter did not specifically respond to an emailed request for comment on the data leak.
