The basic idea is not to hit (slap/pull) until the lead, not the rod, is 180 degrees from the casting direction. This is usually when the rod is past the 6 o'clock position, with 12 o'clock being the casting direction. Usually you should wait until the rod is near the 4 o'clock position. What I forgot to mention though is that if you get the lead more than 90 degrees from the tip, the lead will be in the right position sooner and you will get a more efficient strike. Practicing with the heavy leads (175g, 200g) when casting from the bottom will help with this. Good luck!
