When performing dynamic analysis of a structure, the time factor comes into play, meaning that acceleration, velocity and displacement in the equation of motion are functions of time. This makes the equation of motion a second order ordinary differential equation for which only a numerical solution is possible. There are several methods to solve this problem and two of these important and widely used approaches are explicit and implicit methods. In this video, we talk about each of these two methods, their differences and when to use which one to perform a successful dynamic analysis without convergence problems.
