Over the past few weeks, my opinion on technology conferences has changed 180 degrees.
Not long ago I made a video where I essentially concluded that conferences… aren't worth it, and now I have to kind of take that back.

My main problem with attending these events was the ROI. For you as an individual, a ticket plus flights, plus accommodation, plus time plus sore feet from walking all day… wasn't even close to worth it. $2,000 to $3,000 in exchange for some networking? Can you put a number on that? It's a hefty price tag any way you look at it.

Even for a company. Last month, we flew to San Francisco with six team members to attend the Saastr conference, and our total bill was around $12,000. We tried to get more value out of the trip than the conference itself (and we did), but it's still a lot of money.

And that's nothing compared to the costs companies spend on running a booth and handing out giveaways.

So I sat down with a few startups to understand not only why they do it, but how it has become one of their core outreach strategies. And they… kind of won me over.

So here are some of their thoughts, as well as some of my own insights, to get the most out of conferences.
