Phil Baty, editorial director of global rankings at Times Higher Education, explains the methodology behind THE World University Rankings. THE World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess research-intensive universities across all their core functions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments.
The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (learning environment); research (volume, revenue and reputation); citations (impact of research); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry revenue (knowledge transfer).
