There are a total of 141 collectibles in The Last of Us. 85 artifacts, 30 Firefly pendants, 12 training manuals, 14 comic books. Finding them all will earn you five trophies:
Search for the Light [Silver]
Endure and survive [Bronze]
It was all just there [Silver]
I have the [Bronze]
Scavenger [Gold]

The game has 12 chapters. All of them (except the prologue) have collectibles. You can track your overall progress in the collectibles section of the bonus menu or by pressing the select button during gameplay. After you beat the game for the first time, you can also see how many collectibles of each type you've found per chapter in the chapter select. You must reach the next checkpoint after finding a collectible! Otherwise, progress is lost. You'll have to collect it again when you die.
All your collection progress will be carried over to New Game+. You can also obtain missing items via Chapter Select.

Note: Some collectibles are automatically placed in your inventory and cannot be missed. These are not included in the video counter (since they do not have their own location in the game world).
