Others, like Étienne-Louis Boullée, became famous precisely for designs that were never realized. Boullée was inspired by pure geometric forms and designed visionary buildings on an enormous scale that formed the necessary institutions for an ideal, utopian society. His works anticipated 20th-century futurism and inspired architects in the post-war period.
