Transcript (partial):
I've talked to a lot of business people about leadership, and there's literature on leadership, but it's not good literature. It's – it's quite superficial. Partly because it's not that easy to define leadership, and partly because there are different, you know, people have different temperaments and different temperaments can be leaders. They just do it in different ways. Well, there's something common to being a leader, and I would say one of them is that as a real leader, you actually know where you're going. Right? Because what are you supposed to do? Lead people in circles? It's like they might follow you, but you're not a leader, you're just a charlatan. So you have to know where you're going, and then you have to be able to communicate that, and then people have to trust you. So you have to actually be honest, because people are not that stupid, at least not over a long period of time. And then your path has to have some value, because otherwise nobody would want to go with you. And then you might say, what are the qualities that make you a leader? And I would say they are basically character traits. And this is not naive optimism or casual moralizing. It has nothing to do with that. We know, for example, that conscientiousness, the personality trait, is a good predictor of long-term success in most jobs, not all, but most. And that one of the qualities associated with conscientiousness is that people keep their word. They are trustworthy. And that is certainly an element of a leader, especially over a reasonable period of time. You have to be able to trust the person. They can even be tough, can't they? It doesn't matter, because there are tough leaders and kind leaders. But as long as they do what they say, you can follow them. And you know, future gain is assured, or something like that. The idea that character development is more important for leadership than being the firstborn is a very important psychological insight, that it is character development that makes you favored by God. You know, and I think we've forgotten that in many ways because there's not a lot of emphasis on character development in our educational system, and that surprises me very, very much. I think that's maybe partly because in our fractured society, we can't agree on what constitutes a reasonable character goal. So we give up and don't teach our children at all, especially in school, what an admirable person is, or even let them know that maybe they should try to be one. You know, that's actually the most important thing you can learn. Right. And I also think – and I think this is laid out in great detail in the Bible stories as well – that when there are enough admirable people, things work. And if there aren't, things… things are terrible. You're going to be wiped out. Remember when Abraham was negotiating with God about Sodom and Gomorrah, he asked God to save the city if there were 40 admirable people there, right? Respectable – but let's say admirable, right? I don't want to – I don't want to say good, because /"good/" is kind of corrupted by casual use. I mean, admirable, noble people, right?…
