Frontside mechanics allow you to generate maximum power and ultimately sprint faster. Good frontside mechanics are crucial when sprinting because they help optimize your speed and efficiency.

Frontside and backside mechanics are terms that are thrown around a lot, but despite their common use, there is some confusion about what they mean and how they affect speed.

When sprinting, your frontside mechanics refer to everything that happens in front of the hips. Proper frontside mechanics involve driving the knee forward and up toward the chest (strong hip flexors), which allows you to generate more power and maintain a stable core position.

Developing proper frontside technique will allow you to increase your stride length and generate more power with less effort, resulting in a more efficient and faster sprinting motion that will result in a significant increase in speed.

In contrast, backside mechanics require a more inefficient movement pattern where your legs move backwards behind your body in an inverted half-moon motion. This can cause you to lose power and increase ground time. Backside mechanics can also cause you to land in front of your center of gravity, limiting your ability to push down the lane.

In this lesson, Olympic coach Ken Harnden provides a complete overview of frontside and backside mechanics. You'll get actionable tips to improve your sprint form, as well as 4 highly effective drills to help you develop great frontside mechanics.
