World War II saw the use of a wide variety of codes, from substitution ciphers to the use of Navajo code talkers in the Pacific. Here, science journalist and author Simon Singh demonstrates the German Enigma machine, a typewriter-like device for encrypting messages. He shows not only how it works, but also the strengths and serious flaws of its method.
