For many, conflict is a negative experience and a sign that something has gone wrong. Viewed from this perspective, it often leads to interactions that leave us frustrated and dissatisfied. In this talk, Clair identifies some of the reasons we get stuck in the justification trap and also offers hope for a new way of dealing with conflict. This different approach unlocks the possibilities of conflict and empowers us to create the changes we desire in the world around us, in our relationships, in our workplaces, in our communities and, most importantly, in ourselves.

Clair Canfield is a consultant and lecturer at Utah State University. He holds degrees in communications and a diploma in alternative dispute resolution.

Initially inspired by his own struggles with conflict, Clair is on a mission to change the way people think and feel about conflict. "Conflict holds before us our deepest needs and our greatest hope, and is the doorway to opportunity to create the change we desire in our lives," Clair explained. "It's common to feel trapped and stuck when we experience conflict, but there is a way out!"

This talk was delivered at a TEDx event that used the TED conference format but was independently organized by a local community. For more information, visit http://ted.com/tedx
