#1 – A Camera – This is the most important part of streaming because without a camera you don't have video. I've been blown away by the quality of cameras lately. The camera I'm filming this with I bought used on eBay for about 1200. You can get a camera for basic live streaming for 100-200 to about 2000.

You're looking for a camera that has either an HDMI live output or an SDI output. The SDI output tends to be found on more expensive cameras starting around 1500-2000, so you'll probably get a camera with an HDMI output. Most inexpensive cameras with this output don't have a full-size HDMI port, but instead have a mini or micro HDMI cable. These cables usually come with the camera, but you can also buy them cheaply from Amazon.com.

#2. Now that we have our camera, we need a… TRIPOD. A tripod seems small and trivial, but a tripod is actually extremely important. Why? Because when your pastor starts preaching and moves from left to right, you don't want your online audience to get motion sick because Brother Larry can't pan smoothly with your $5 garage sale tripod. Walmart actually has a decent tripod in their electronics section that runs pretty smoothly and costs about $40. If you have the extra budget, you should get a good tripod.

#3. Now that we have our camera and tripod, we now need our streaming equipment. There are a few ways to do this. You can use a computer or a dedicated streaming box like a Tricaster or Terdek box that streams directly to your streaming service. However, I highly recommend using a computer for your live streaming. These are more versatile and scalable as you expand your live streaming.

As a streaming computer, I highly recommend you use a PC and not a Mac. While I'm a total Mac guy, for streaming, a Windows PC is the best choice! I won't go into detail about the computer specs, but to start, you'll need a faster i5 or i7 processor, at least 8GB of RAM, an Nvidia GTX 900 or 1000 series graphics card, and a video capture card/device.

Finally, you need streaming software. This is the software that streams and often mixes your various input sources. Some of the most popular streaming programs are:

1. vMix
2. Wirecast
3. OBS
4. Live Stream Studio

Personally, I highly recommend vMix. It is by far the best streaming program. vMix doesn't pay me to promote their software, it's simply the best. Our church has been using it for 12 years and it's the best of the best.
