There's no surefire way to tell if someone is lying – but there are plenty of myths about it! But that doesn't mean there aren't some /"tells/" that can collectively give you clues. Let's look at some of the myths and facts behind the language of lying.
1. Eyes
The most common myth of all: Liars don't look you in the eyes. Wrong, wrong, wrong! This is so wrong that the opposite is true. Liars know this rule and use it to look you in the eyes even more often. There is no reliable connection.
But eyes convey information. If you ask a simple, closed question where the answer should be obvious, a truth seeker may look away for a split second, but a liar may look away longer while making up a story to justify his answer.
Fear is a bigger factor for a liar than it is for a truth-teller, so you can expect the physiological responses of fear—wide eyes and dilated pupils—to be more evident. But beware—dilated pupils can also indicate attraction or just poor lighting.
2. Somehow…
Liars want to limit their lies and therefore use words like “somehow”
