Pokémon Legends: Arceus (January 28 – Switch)
With Pokémon Legends: Arceus, The Pokémon Company is finally giving fans of the series what they've been wanting. Well, sort of. While Arceus is definitely more open than previous games in the series, it's not a true open-world experience like Breath of the Wild. That's because the region you explore will be divided into separate areas, the developers have confirmed. Still, expect a more free-form style of exploration with many of the – pardon the pun – expected features. To complete your Pokédex, you'll need to research Pokémon, then find them and battle them. And speaking of which, battle has changed. Your Pokémon can now choose between two battle styles – agile style and strong style – and depending on their stats, some Pokémon can now take multiple turns in a row. As for exploration, Arceus features a deer-like Pokémon you can ride on land, a water-type Pokémon to help you brave the high seas, and a flying-type Pokémon to take to the skies. You can play PokemoArceus on Switch starting January 28.

Horizon Forbidden West (February 18 – PS5, PS4, PC)
PlayStation has been slowly but steadily feeding us new information about Horizon Forbidden West every few months. Most recently, there was a fantastic trailer at the Game Awards, and just before that, we heard that Guerrilla Games has an entire development team dedicated to making the world more alive. Previously, we've seen gameplay footage that makes it clear that exploration in Alloy's latest adventure will be much more fluid and flexible than it was in Zero Dawn. For starters, Alloy can now freely climb rocky surfaces, and she'll have a grappling hook called a Pullcaster that she'll use to pull herself to very generously placed grapple points throughout the world. You'll also have the Sheildwing, which lets you glide through the air, and finally, you'll have a mouthpiece that lets you breathe underwater. Combat is also getting improvements. Alongside revamped skill trees and new weapons, Aloy will have Valor Surges. These are special attacks – there will be 12 in total – that you can charge up by cleverly maneuvering in battle. Once charged, Valor Surges can be unleashed to deal huge damage or perhaps unleash a special ability. As you probably know, you'll also encounter new robo-creatures. Most recently, we caught a glimpse of this giant snake. Pretty cool. Forbidden West is set to release on February 18th.

Elden Ring (February 25 PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC)
Some people would call Elden Ring an open-world Dark Souls, but as someone who has played both, I can say that Elden Ring is much more than that. First of all, this is a proper open world. Much more open than even the world of the original Dark Souls. You can choose what you want to do and where you want to go, and there will be much more optional content, including bosses, mini-bosses, and explorable areas. Plus, you'll have a horse to help you get around with ease, but you can even fight on horseback. There's also a crouch button, stealth tactics, a jump button, and you can equip different weapons with powerful abilities. You can even summon spirits in Elden Ring, which are AI-controlled allies that fight alongside you. Yes. This isn't Dark Souls. There are similarities though, the combat is as merciless as ever, and as for the game's actual dungeons, I fully expect the same stellar level design. If you want to know my in-depth impressions, check out my full preview, which I link to in this video and in the description below. Overall, I'm confident this will be another smash hit from From Software when it launches on February 25th for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
