Vulnerability management has long been a cornerstone of effective cybersecurity. As modern threats become more complex and regulations continue to evolve, security solutions must evolve as well.

In an exclusive interview with CRNtv host Sydney Neely, Gavin Millard, Deputy CTO and VP of Product at Tenable, explains how Tenable is leading the way in vulnerability management with its innovative technology.

Vulnerability management has been critical to effective cybersecurity for years. How has it evolved recently to address new challenges and threats?

The attack surface we protect has changed dramatically in recent years, increasing in size and complexity and now involving multiple asset types. So vulnerability management has had to adapt to scale at the same pace, detect and ingest new asset types, and gain visibility into each attack surface.

We're also seeing a huge increase in vulnerabilities being disclosed. The ability to prioritize those vulnerabilities is incredibly important. For example, it's not acceptable to have 22,000 vulnerabilities disclosed and all of them needing to be fixed, especially when it's a very large attack surface. Additionally, the time it takes to exploit those vulnerabilities has drastically decreased. So instead of taking days or weeks to be able to exploit a new disclosed vulnerability, sometimes it can take as little as hours.

It is critical for a good vulnerability management program today to be able to identify very quickly where these critical vulnerabilities exist and then prioritize which things need to be fixed first.

How is Tenable driving innovation and expanding its product offerings to stay ahead of the cybersecurity landscape?

Tenable is a pioneer in developing an exposure management approach that puts vulnerabilities in context with a lot of other information. That includes threat intelligence to be able to predict the likelihood of a vulnerability being exploited. Also things like identity, you know who is associated with the asset and whether that asset is important and the ability to be able to predict the criticality of an asset. And all of that is enabled by our machine learning and AI, which we've invested very heavily in over the last few years, and our data lake, which drives a lot of the platform.

On the threat side, we now also disclose all the threat intelligence we collect on each individual vulnerability, allowing our users to make decisions on the right vulnerabilities and dramatically reduce the number of vulnerabilities they have to deal with.

For example, when I do vulnerability analysis, I can see a timeline for each vulnerability: when it was discovered, when a proof of concept was made available for it, whether attackers are exploiting it, whether ransomware or another attack technique is being used. And this information is critical to deciding which vulnerabilities need to be fixed.

What makes Tenable the ideal partner for MSSPs and channel partners in delivering comprehensive vulnerability management solutions to their customers?

When the next big virus hits, the first thing a customer asks their trusted partner is, is this important and where are we at risk? And we're the company that helps answer both of those questions. We have an MSSP offering that partners can leverage to help their customers understand which assets are affected by those vulnerabilities, describe the criticality of that vulnerability using vulnerability intelligence, and help their customers focus on the assets that matter.

We are also 100% channel-focused. We have a global presence and work very closely with our clients, both in selling to their customers and in offering these MSSP services.
