Systematic literature review using meta-analysis is one of the most important methods for reviewing scientific evidence on a topic. It starts with a literature review. If you're in medicine, that might mean using PubMed (but there are other search engines too). The studies you select need to be evaluated. Evaluating papers is important because different types of studies can provide different strengths of evidence. For example, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide very strong evidence, while case-control studies provide weak evidence. Meta-analysis is the most common method for synthesizing quantitative data. The synthesis is usually presented as a Forrest plot, so if you're writing a PhD thesis or doing any other research work, preparing a literature review is an important first step.
