Description:
Getting someone's contact information at a networking event or at a bar can be difficult, especially if you don't know them very well. Simply asking for their number can be met with resistance or rejection. But according to Vanessa Van Edwards, founder of Science of People, there's a better way to phrase it that can make the conversation seem more effortless and increase your chances of getting the person's contact information.
Instead of asking, "Can I have your number?", which builds on permission-based resistance, try asking, "What's the best number to reach you at?" or "What's the best email address to reach you at?" This creates the impression that getting the contact information is simply a natural part of networking, and the other person is more willing to share their information.
The key is to make the conversation feel more natural and less like a request. If you use wording that suggests providing contact information is expected and necessary, the other person may be more willing to share their information without feeling pressured or uncomfortable.
So next time you're at a networking event or a bar and want to know someone's contact information, ask them the best way to reach them right away and you'll find that the conversation will be much easier.
