Aimed at kids ages 8-12, Roblox is the largest user-generated online gaming platform. A recent study found that Roblox users under the age of 13 visit their site an average of 25.5 times per month. That means younger users log in to play Roblox almost every day. That's why we created this Roblox Safety Guide for Parents to help you learn how to keep your family safe.

What is Roblox?
–For children ages 8 to 12 Roblox is the largest user-generated online gaming platform

–Players create and upload games to the platform

–Users can play other custom games in a multiplayer environment

–Players can create an avatar and get some in-game money to rent a house

–To decorate their house or buy new outfits for their avatar, players must spend real money, not in-game money, or have another player purchase their items, or by earning daily Robux with a membership.

–According to Roblox, there are 22 million different user-generated games, so it's difficult to know the goals and nature of each game

Roblox works on these platforms:
–Xbox One
–Android
–iOS
–Windows
–iPod Touch
–Mac OS
–FireOS

Gaming stats for teens:
–4 out of 5 households own a video game console

–Continuous gaming leads to poorer school grades and a difficult relationship with parents

–72% of all teenagers play video games on a computer, game console, or portable device such as a mobile phone.

Roblox in the news:
/“Cyber expert warns parents about gaming apps after reports of Roblox sex chat./” –ABC

/“Child molesters are using Roblox to target children.” –NBC

/"There are reports of users shutting down chat and exchanging inappropriate/predatory messages with young players./" – Common Sense Media

Why should parents care?
–Despite parental controls, children are still vulnerable to attacks by sex offenders

–Because users can create and upload games, inappropriate and graphic content may appear in each game

–Cyberbullying is widespread, especially the kind where players are bullied for not spending money on their avatar.

–Due to Roblox's automatic billing feature, many kids accidentally sign up to pay for features on a monthly basis

–Costs can add up quickly when your student plays Roblox

–The purpose of the game is to interact with other players, the majority of other players are anonymous

–It is popular to chat with other players in the game. This is where students receive the most attention and are most vulnerable

–Roblox allows users to invite other players into their in-game bedroom and behave inappropriately there. Although nothing explicit happens in the game, the actions are implied
