We are seeing more and more hard drives with damaged platters coming into the store for data recovery. The surface of the platter can only be worked on with the right equipment and, most importantly, the right attitude. Many data recovery companies claim that the hard drive is unrecoverable due to platter damage. Although such claims are sometimes true, in many cases it is their lack of skill, ability, will and desire that prevents data recovery from these devices. There are ways to deal with scratches on platters and successfully recover data from parts of the platter that are still intact by tampering with the firmware and physically modifying some key parts. The goal is to prepare the platter to work only with undamaged surfaces and to avoid further contact of the heads with the scratched area. This video shows how to recover a hard drive with deep scratches on one of the platter surfaces.
