Less than a year before the next presidential election on November 5, 2024, candidates are already vying for their party’s nomination.

The Democratic and Republican primaries begin in January, with the Republican caucus taking place on January 15 in Iowa.

There, voters will decide whether to support Donald Trump – the party's clear frontrunner – or choose an alternative in the form of Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy or a handful of other candidates.

The start of the primaries is important because it sets the tone for the rest of the election and shows which campaigns have the most momentum and support among voters.

After Iowa, Republicans will vote in New Hampshire and South Carolina, followed by a number of other states and more than a dozen on Super Tuesday, March 5.

In the polls, Trump is well ahead of DeSantis, who is in second place, by more than 25 points.

Despite concerns about his age, Joe Biden remains the most likely Democratic candidate, and there are no serious challengers to his candidacy in 2024.

The 81-year-old president enjoys low approval ratings across the country, but is widely expected to be nominated again.

The primary process will conclude next summer at the Republican and Democratic conventions in Milwaukee and Chicago, respectively. From there, the two parties will then begin their campaigns for the general election.
