Failover and failback in Site Recovery consist of four phases:
Phase 1: Failover from on-premises: After you set up replication for on-premises machines to Azure, if your on-premises site fails, fail over those machines to Azure. After failover, Azure VMs are created from replicated data.
Phase 2: Reprotect Azure VMs: In Azure, you reprotect the Azure VMs so that they are replicated back to the on-premises site. The on-premises VM (if available) is powered off during reprotection to ensure data consistency.
Phase 3: Failover from Azure: When your on-premises site is back to normal, perform another failover, this time to fail back the Azure VMs to your on-premises site. You can fail back to the original site from which you failed over, or to a different site.
Phase 4: Reprotect local machines: After failback, re-enable replication of local machines to Azure.
