Pathfinding in video games is done using an algorithm that calculates the path between point A and point B. Pathfinding is used whenever a game requires something to navigate through the game environment. Many strategies are used in pathfinding, such as navigation networks, waypoints, steering, hierarchies, the Dijkstras algorithm, and the A* algorithm. In the gaming industry, the A* algorithm is very popular. Many factors can go into calculating the path, such as the shortest path, the fastest path, the cheapest path, or other factors that are important to the game. To be successful, all of this must be calculated in real time as part of the gaming experience.
