Simply put, a /"patent of addition/" is a type of patent granted for improvements or modifications to an existing, already patented invention. It allows the inventor to protect new features or improvements made to their original invention.

Section 54 of the Indian Patent Act defines a "patent of addition" as a patent granted for "an improvement or modification of an invention already patented". A patent of addition can be granted only if it is an improvement or modification of an invention which is already the subject of a granted patent. Finally, Section 54 explains that a patent of addition expires on the same day as the original patent and that it is subject to the same conditions and requirements as the original patent.

Essentially, a patent of addition is a way for inventors to protect incremental improvements to their existing inventions without having to file an entirely new patent application. It encourages innovation and rewards inventors who continue to refine and improve their original ideas.
