My only advice would be to do some pair programming as part of the hiring process, which is very easy to do remotely. Actually sit down and work together. I also have a second piece of advice, at least when we're talking about programmers. In QA it's a little bit different, but when we're talking about programmers, I would say the question I would always ask is, "What do you program in your free time?" and I would actually like to look at that code. Because that's something that person would have some passion for. So I would ask, "What do you program in your free time?" And I would actually look at, maybe they put it on GitHub and I would look at that.
