Do you want to take the big step and get into competitive Magic? Do you dream of one day playing on the Pro Tour? This video will give you a basic understanding of what it takes to start the journey to becoming a Pro Magic player. Many of the examples and numbers I use are primarily for American players, so you should check with your local tournament organizers to see how this model differs for you.
How and when do I start?

If you want to become competitive, you must first understand what you are getting into. Competitive Magic requires a lot of time and investment, not only on a personal level, but financially as well.

Typically, you'll need to invest in a competitive deck, or perhaps multiple decks, which can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Even if you're only participating in limited events, you'll likely need to spend money on booster packs to improve your skills. Events sometimes cost money too, so you'll need to budget for that as well.

You need to spend a lot of time learning, testing, and understanding the meta of the format you want to compete in (Limited, Modern, Standard, Vintage, or Legacy).

You also need to understand the rules of Magic on a deeper level.

You may also need to travel regularly not just to local events, but to events across the country – or even worldwide.

However, the rewards of competitive play are substantial and worth the effort. The competitive community is great and full of people who share your passion and drive. And then there's the glory that comes with winning an event: notoriety, a nice trophy, and earning Pro Points to move on to the next level. Seeing yourself excel at an activity you love is invigorating and there's nothing like it.

As long as you are aware of this level of commitment and are willing to make it, all you have to do is grab a deck of cards and join a competition!
