In this video, Keith Barker explains how IDS and IPS work, what they do for a network, and how they differ. Every network security solution comes with costs and effort: knowing the strengths and drawbacks of each option will help you make the right decision.
The key difference between an IDS and an IPS is that an IDS is plugged into the network, while an IPS is actually plugged into the network traffic. So while an IDS can issue a warning about malicious traffic, only an IPS actually stops traffic when a malicious actor is detected.
At first glance, an IPS may sound like the better solution, but it is also usually more expensive. Unlike an IDS, which can see all network traffic in one place, an IPS must be installed to see a machine's local activity. Any local installation costs money and effort that an IDS does not incur.
And now you can learn all the basics about the pros and cons of IDS and IPS with this CISSP video.
