Continuing our Mastering the Basics series, Jonathan explains how your poker strategy should change when multiple people are involved in a hand. Learn how to master multiway pots to crush your opponents!

In most low stakes poker games, you will find that most pots involve multiple players. These multi-way pots can be difficult to handle and many players make big mistakes by playing too many hands and then finding themselves dominated when all the chips end up in the middle!

As more players enter the pot, you need to proceed with caution. Offsuit hands are especially bad with multi-way cards, as you are more likely to be dominated. Marginal suited hands also lose a lot of value. Your 3-betting range should become tighter and more linear.

Jonathan looks at the differences in the preflop ranges when faced with a single open and then when faced with a caller between you and the opener. Your range should be getting tighter! He also looks at the differences in the ranges of poker hands that choose to 3-bet rather than just call when faced with a raise and a caller.

It is important to learn some of these important postflop multiway concepts.
The nut and range edge are both greatly reduced because there are more ranges in the pot. Because they are reduced, the strategies that come with a large range and/or nut edge are also greatly reduced. This means that very frequent bets as well as huge bet sizes are no longer seen. Some general adjustments you should make are significantly tighter defense when you encounter aggression in multi-way pots. You should fold too much when you are not closing the action due to equity realization factors.

The strength of the hand will usually decrease in multiway pots. The ongoing ranges should be much tighter, so you need more equity to put money into the pot. Cleaning up equity makes more sense in multiway pots. Some general adjustments you should make are to make your bets more linear, make sure you use fewer bluffs without equity and more hands that need to be protected in your betting range.

When you have the opportunity to play aggressively, you should check much more frequently, use smaller bet sizes on average, and be more linear with your bets/raises. When faced with aggression, you should defend much more tightly. You should exceed your common minimum defense frequency if you don't exit the action.
