Decide if the dialogue actually adds something to your story. If it doesn't, leave it out.

Think about what message you want to convey with the dialogue. For example, if you want to explain the relationship between the characters, go back and make sure that is achieved.

Don't be afraid to interrupt the conversation with descriptions of the setting or what the characters are doing or thinking. Dialogue doesn't have to consist only of the words the characters speak.
