This is only my opinion.
Layne Norton, some people love him and some people love to hate him.
If you are interested in powerlifting or bodybuilding, you have probably heard his name at least once.
In case you don't happen to know who he is.
Here is a brief bio. He has a PhD in nutritional science. He is an IFPA and NGA bodybuilder and also calls himself a professional powerlifter.
Layne is best known as a bodybuilding and fitness coach. He boasts that he has trained over a thousand people in 13 years. That's exactly what we want to talk about here.
As many of you know, I was considering competing in classic bodybuilding, and since my studies taught me a lot about training related to health, weight loss, and strength and conditioning, I was unable to learn more than the basics of bodybuilding, as bodybuilding is still a taboo in the educational world.
When Layne offered his competition prep book for pre-sale, I bought it immediately.
I just read the book from cover to cover and I have to say I was impressed with the amount of detail he was able to put into it. It's 264 pages in total and covers everything you need to know about dieting for competition.
Not only is Layne meticulous in his recommendations, but he also cites research articles that support his recommendations.
The only flaws I have are the chapter on training and the discussion of the post-competition or off-season period.
That's not to say he won't teach you some of the basics, but if you're not an experienced lifter or don't know much about programming workouts, you might feel like you're missing out. But in Layne's own words and defense, those two topics alone could well be worth their own books.
Overall, the book is quite expensive at only 264 pages. But if you want to learn more about competition preparation or are an experienced weightlifter, this is a good place to start or supplement your current knowledge.
I would like to reiterate that if you are a beginner or have been lifting weights for less than 1-2 years, or even if you only go to the gym occasionally and do not plan on competing, you would have no problem buying the book. It will not do you any more good than any other book on the market.
Personally, I'm thrilled I bought it. I think it has been and will be a great help to me in my stage preparation.
