Iterative and incremental development is any combination of iterative design or iterative method and incremental build model for software development. The combination has been known for a long time and is often proposed for large development projects. For example, the 1985 DOD-STD-2167 (in section 4.1.2) mentions: /"During software development, several iterations of the software development cycle may be running simultaneously./" and /"This process can be described as an 'evolutionary acquisition' or 'incremental build' approach./" The relationship between iterations and increments is determined by the overall software development methodology and process. The exact number and type of each incremental build and what is iterated depends on each individual development project.
Iterative and incremental development are essential components of the modified waterfall models, the Rational Unified Process, Extreme Programming and generally the various agile software development frameworks.
