Have you ever noticed that the same hotel can be rated three, four or even five stars? This is the case with the iconic Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.

The reason for this is that companies, from travel guides to websites, use different criteria to rate hotels. Some rely solely on online reviews to determine their star rating.

CNBC Travel sat down with Yngvar Stray of Capella Singapore and Tim Hentschel of HotelPlanner to talk about what star ratings matter and what travelers can expect from a 1-star to a 5-star stay.
