Hi, I'm Richard from TurboTax and I have tips for tax deductions.
First, for your charitable donations to be deductible, they must go to an organization that qualifies under Section 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code.
You can use the Exempt Organizations Select Check Tool on IRS.gov to check whether the organization is exempt from taxes.
Most donations to places of worship, international relief organizations, and veterans groups are tax deductible. Cash, real estate, supplies, and even clothing and household items can be deducted.
Second, make sure you have a canceled check, bank slip, or receipt from the charity, as documentation is required for donations of any size.
If you donated by phone, you can use your phone bill as proof, as long as it includes the name of the charity, the date and the donation amount. If your donation was $250 or more, you will need a verification letter from the organization.
Third, know what is not eligible for tax relief. Donations to civic groups, clubs, chambers of commerce, homeowners associations, political campaigns and lobby groups, and most foreign organizations are not eligible.
If you are unsure if a donation qualifies, call the charity or visit IRS.gov.
