The healthcare sector faces major challenges that result in inefficiencies and ineffective delivery of quality healthcare. This is reflected in the dissatisfaction of many stakeholders, especially patients. Stakeholder dissatisfaction with hospital performance signals the need for change. One step towards healthcare reform is to create autonomous, accountable, and well-managed hospitals that are capable of making evidence-based decisions to provide patient-centered, high-quality care while interacting positively with their complex stakeholder environment. Corporate governance frameworks propose structural reform principles that lead to autonomy and accountability. Implementing such principles in the hospital setting has the potential to increase the efficiency with which hospitals deliver healthcare, make decisions, and improve their overall performance competitively. The Healthcare Governance and Transparency Association (HeGTA), with the support of the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), has developed a guide: Principles and Guidelines of Governance in Hospitals with the aim of providing practitioners with a framework to address governance challenges in Egyptian hospitals. The guide, published in Egypt in March 2014, sets a milestone on the path to well-governed hospitals by bridging the gap between theory and practice while avoiding quick fixes. The guide links five different areas under one umbrella: corporate and clinical governance, board excellence, control, audit and risk framework, sustainability and inclusiveness, and transparency and disclosure. Dr. Mostafa Hunter, Principal Founder and Chairman of HeGTA and lead author of the guide, will share his insights on the key principles to improve governance in hospitals to achieve effective and efficient healthcare service delivery.
