Wellbeing can be defined as feeling happy, content, healthy, safe and secure. The definition suggests positive physical and mental health, mood and emotions. It encompasses a wide range of factors influenced by a person's health, lifestyle, responsibilities and preferences. While some of these factors can be controlled by the individual, others are less preventable or manageable. The workplace can have a significant impact on wellbeing. It may be the primary cause of changes in an employee's wellbeing or it may be the environment in which the consequences of negative wellbeing occur.

Employers can also create an environment that responds in a supportive way when wellbeing deteriorates. There are important tools around a number of key factors in employee wellbeing. When leaders show interest, commitment and active involvement in activities or measures that promote wellbeing, this has a positive impact on employee engagement. Well-promoted wellbeing strategies can also be a positive aspect for the employer brand and be perceived externally as a responsible employer.

Employees want to be assured that they have opportunities to advance their careers, whether through a promotion or by expanding their knowledge in their current role. While companies and their HR managers may not have much influence over the health or lifestyle of their employees, their physical health has a strong impact on their wellbeing at work. Mental health in the workplace is a complex and sensitive issue. While many of the treatments for mental health, stress, anxiety, etc. are specialized interventions, it can still be helpful if HR managers provide empathy and support.
