A DDoS attack allows a hacker to flood a network or server with fake traffic. Too much traffic overloads resources and disrupts connectivity, making the system unable to process genuine user requests. Services become unavailable and the targeted company suffers extended downtime, lost revenue, and unhappy customers.

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) is a cyberattack that aims to bring down a network, service, or server by flooding the system with spoofed traffic. The sudden increase in messages, connection requests, or packets overloads the target's infrastructure, causing the system to slow down or crash.

Some hackers use DDoS attacks to extort a ransom from companies (similar to ransomware). However, more common motives for DDoS attacks include:

Disrupt services or communications.
Damage the brand.
Gain a business advantage when a competitor's website is down.
Distract the incident response team.

DDoS attacks pose a threat to businesses of all sizes, from Fortune 500 companies to small online retailers. Statistically, DDoS hackers most commonly target:

Online retailer.
IT service provider.
Financial and fintech companies.
government agencies.
Online gaming and gambling company.

Attackers typically use a botnet to carry out a DDoS attack. A botnet is an interconnected network of malware-infected computers, mobile devices, and IoT devices under the attacker's control. Hackers use these "zombie" devices to send an excessive number of requests to a target website or server's IP address.

Once the botnet sends enough requests, online services (emails, websites, web apps, etc.) slow down or fail. According to a report by Radware, the average DDoS attack lasts this long:

For 33%, services are unavailable for one hour.
60% last less than a whole day.
15% last a month.

While a DDoS attack does not usually result in a data leak or loss directly, the victim must spend time and money getting services back online. Lost business, abandoned shopping carts, frustrated users, and reputational damage are common consequences of failing to prevent DDoS attacks.
