In this video, home restoration brothers Dave and Rich show you how to prevent ice damage to a dock, boat, or lift. Ice can do a lot of damage to all of these things. Ice crushes metal. It twists it. It bends it. It pulls up your dock posts. It causes all kinds of problems that you'll have to fix in the spring when you'd rather just get in your boat and go.

The two main types of ice prevention are bubblers and de-icers. Bubblers blow air through pipes, creating a flow of water. The other option we chose is to use a de-icer, which is basically a small fan and motor unit that is submerged underwater by a dock or lift.

We highly recommend the deicer shown in this video. This is a Kasco Marine 1/2 HP deicer. It is easy to install, just attach the two ropes to the sides of your dock and plug it in. The unit hangs from the ropes about 4-6 feet underwater. The ropes are attached to the unit slightly offset so it tilts. We tilted it at the end of our dock toward the shore. This creates at least a 50 foot wide area around the dock that is ice free.

We also bought a thermometer that connects to the defroster. The thermometer turns the defroster on when it reaches a certain temperature. This is very convenient because we don't have to keep running to the lake house to turn the defroster on and off.

It's been incredibly cold here in the last few weeks. Temperatures have been between 12 and 3 degrees below zero. But our Kasco De-Icer was a real champion!
For a while it seemed as if all the geese, ducks and swans from the entire lake had gathered at our ice-free jetty.
