Many of my clients have disorganized warehouses, which makes products impossible to find and warehouse teams extremely inefficient. In this video, I'll discuss how to organize and label your storage bins. This is the same strategy we've used with every retailer we've implemented a warehouse management system for.

Most warehouses have a structure with different areas, shelves, bays, levels and pallet positions. To organize this structure in an easy to understand way, you need to combine these different components into a location identifier per container. For example, here is a typical warehouse layout

Areas in the warehouse (freezer, cold room, food): A, B, C

Rows of shelves (assuming you have 5 aisles, the left and right sides form a row): 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,10

Fields (sections of the shelf. Assuming five fields per aisle): 01,02,03,04,05

Level (how many levels high is the rack): 1,2,3

Pallet position (two pallet positions per shelf): A,B

This would be a typical location for trash cans in your food area:
C – 01 – 01 – 2 – A
