The deployment pipeline is a central, organizing idea in a continuous delivery and DevOps-focused approach to modern software engineering. The idea of the deployment pipeline was developed in one of the largest agile projects of the time, carried out by the software consultancy ThoughtWorks in the early 2000s. It was first described publicly in a talk by Dave Farley at a GOTO conference in London and subsequently explained in detail in Dave and Jez Humble's seminal book "Continuous Delivery". Today it is a cornerstone of a modern software development approach.
