About this video: So you want to start a community Discord server. Great! I have a few Discord communities now and try my best to stay up to date with all the great community features Discord has released. So let's jump in and look at how you can create your own community Discord server and set it up successfully.

The first thing you need to do is create your server. You can also convert existing servers into community servers, but for this video we'll start with a new one. Choose to create the server for a club or community.

When you create your server, make sure to add a photo and a short description of the Discord community. These will be used in several places later. Also

Once you have your server set up, let's dive right into the server settings. To start, we'll head over to the Community tab. Because by turning this into a community server, we're unlocking a lot of different features for community servers. Click on the Enable Community option and select Get Started. Confirm the options here and click Next.

If you are a Discord community server, you must have a channel for rules and community updates. For both, simply select "Create for me". Clicking "Continue" will set up the necessary permissions for your server and you will agree to the Discord Community Server Community Guidelines. You should read these as they are very easy to understand and must be followed in your community.

From there, on the Overview tab, you can change your rule channel, update channel, and set the server's primary language. You can also add a server description, which you should do.

Next, let's look at the welcome screen. This is what you should set up. It will appear when new users join your server. Select "Set up welcome screen", choose the channel new members go to, define what they do, and choose an emoji. Then, fill in a bit of information about your server at the top and add more channels if you need to. You can come back later and add more and preview them in the top right. If it looks good, enable it.

In the video we go through all the additional tabs, but we don't have enough space to explain the rest in the description. However, I want to look at the roles.

Roles are a HUGE part of a community server. Roles are what you need to configure for your server to work properly. We'll set up three roles plus the default @everyone role, but you'll probably have more and you can set up as many as you want.

The Moderation section in the settings is also extremely important for a community Discord server and is a must have in my opinion. This is where you set up your rule checking as well as AutoMod, which allows you to have no bots on your server while still remaining safe and secure. I recommend enabling all AutoMod features.

Finally, we can go back to the server itself and set up the channels. Luckily, you've already done most of the work, so this is quite easy. In the video, we set up all the channels you need for a community Discord server.

Anyway, that's how to start a community Discord server. If you have any questions about creating your own Discord server, let us know in the comments and we'll try to help you out.
