NATO is preparing to transport 800,000 troops and 200,000 armored vehicles to the border with Russia in the event of a full-scale war. Der Spiegel magazine just reported this after gaining access to classified military documents. Russia, North Korea, Iran and China have contingency plans like this. But moving so many troops would be a massive undertaking, the likes of which we have never seen in recent history. How does NATO plan to achieve this goal? What challenges does sending so many soldiers all over the world bring? And what are some of the strengths and weaknesses of a collective defense alliance?

The key to understanding NATO's plan is five new transport routes, each of which circles a different port where transport ships carrying troops and vehicles would arrive. The stated reason for creating these new movement corridors is that Russia's long-range missiles could destroy ports, bridges or bases. Looking at this map, we can see that all of Europe is within range of many types of Russian ballistic missiles. This would severely limit transport options and could make the mobilization of troops under the current plan untenable.
